Brief History of British Columbia
Various Indigenous peoples, including the Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Haida nations originally inhabited the region. In 1778, British explorer Captain James Cook arrived, followed by fur traders and explorers from different European nations.

The area officially became a British colony in 1849 with the establishment of the Crown Colony of Vancouver Island. In 1858, the Fraser River Gold Rush attracted thousands of prospectors, leading to the founding of the mainland colony of British Columbia. The two colonies merged in 1866.
The construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 19th century connected British Columbia to the eastern provinces, enabling trade and growth. In 1871, British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation as its sixth province.

The Order of British Columbia is a civilian honor for merit in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Established in 1989, it honors current or former British Columbia residents for conspicuous achievements in any field. The order is administered by the Governor-in-Council and is intended to honor those who have demonstrated a high level of individual excellence and achievement in any field, benefiting the people of the province or elsewhere. Nominations are received from the public and considered by a seven-person advisory council, with final appointments made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The Order of British Columbia represents the highest form of recognition the province can extend to its citizens. Recipients of the honor are entitled to use the post-nomial letters “OBC.”
British Columbia medal of good citizenship
The British Columbia Medal of Good Citizenship is an honorary medal produced by the Canadian province of British Columbia. It was established by the Government of British Columbia in 2015 to recognize people who “acted in a particularly generous, kind or selfless manner for the common good without expectation of reward.
Recipients of the medal are entitled to use the postnominal letters “MGC.” The medal is not part of the Canadian honors system. As such, the medal is worn on the right side if the recipient also wears decorations that are recognized as part of the national honors system.
